In the Beginning...
In 1988, Dr. Stevens was teaching special education for Wake County Public Schools. A friend told Dr. Stevens about his mother's five years with physical, occupational and speech therapists following her stroke. Despite all the treatments, the woman still could not read, write or speak. At wit's end, the friend asked Dr. Stevens to help. Dr. Stevens put his friend's mom on an individualized program for education. A year later, she was doing all those things.
Since then, Dr. Stevens has continued helping non-readers to read, the non-verbal to speak, and the withdrawn to be more outgoing.
Dr. Stevens students and their families have seen C's and D's in math, reading and language arts rise to A's in as little as one quarter. He has worked with students of all ages and abilities from first grade through high school and beyond.
The main goal and mission of Stevens Prep Academy is "to advocate success in all students". We achieve this goal by various means. The first thing we do is to accept each student at the time they need help, instead of telling them to waste time until the next semester or quarter.
The second thing we do is academic placement testing. We do this to find the strengths and weaknesses of every student versus throwing into an already on-going class as most other schools do.
The third and very important thing that we do is offer small class sizes with 1 on 1 assistance and instruction.
And the fourth thing we do is weekly evaluation of an educational program using the NC state curriculum guidelines but, conforming those guidelines to the level and pace of the student. When done properly, that spells student success.
